As part of the implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic aimed at strengthening coordination and joint action across sectors, while consolidating the role of scientific research and innovation in support of national development, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr. Kamel Baddari, chaired the launch of a high-level thematic scientific research network dedicated to animal production and health on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at the National Higher School of Agronomy in El Harrach. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, with the participation of the Supreme Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad.
This initiative seeks to strengthen synergies between universities, research centers and the agricultural sector, while mobilizing national scientific expertise both in Algeria and abroad. Its objective is to develop innovative scientific and technological solutions that address practical field needs, improve livestock health, and enhance animal production and economic performance.
The initiative’s main expected outcomes and strategic objectives include:
1. Launching the thematic research network on animal production and health: establishing a framework for coordination and cooperation among researchers, university faculty members, veterinarians, professionals and the various institutions concerned.
2. Identifying national research priorities: determining priority research areas in light of the agricultural sector’s actual needs and directing scientific research towards addressing challenges related to animal production and health.
3. Developing joint applied research projects: bringing together universities, research centers, technical services and professionals to translate scientific findings into practical solutions that can be implemented in the field.
4. Valorizing scientific research outcomes and transferring technology: promoting the application of scientific knowledge and technological innovations to improve livestock breeding, animal nutrition and farm management practices, while enhancing production performance.
5. Strengthening disease prevention and the control of animal diseases: developing scientific and technical solutions to improve herd health and reinforce preventive measures and strengthen animal health protection.
6. Mobilizing national scientific expertise abroad: drawing on the experience and contributions of Algerian scientists abroad, in coordination with the Supreme Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad, to strengthen scientific cooperation and develop research projects with significant economic and developmental impact.
7. Enhancing institutional integration between universities and the agricultural sector: coordinating scientific and technical efforts and aligning research programs with the practical needs of producers and livestock farmers.
8. Contributing to food security and sovereignty: supporting livestock development, improving the quality and productivity of animal products, and reducing economic losses caused by animal diseases.
The strategic value of this initiative lies in establishing a national applied research system dedicated to animal production and health. This system will be based on setting research priorities, coordinating efforts among stakeholders, developing joint research projects, valorizing scientific outcomes and mobilizing national expertise both within Algeria and abroad.
This approach is expected to strengthen the role of universities and research Centre’s as active partners in agricultural development and help translate scientific knowledge into tangible, field-based solutions. In doing so, it will contribute to livestock development, improved productivity, and stronger food security and sovereignty across the country.
